FAQs
-
No, The Recovery Barre meetings are always free to attend. There is never any expectation or requirement to donate in order to participate. However, you may choose to donate at your meeting. Meeting-donated funds are not tax-deductible and go directly to the independent instructor and/or host facility, not The Recovery Barre organization. Instructors may use these to help cover costs like space rental, insurance, equipment, or time spent preparing.
-
In many cases, no registration is required to attend The Recovery Barre. However, some host sites may use their own online platform to collect liability waivers, which may involve a simple but free registration-like process. If free registration is preferred by the host facility, that information will be included in our meeting directory.
-
No, The Recovery Barre is not a treatment program and is not intended to replace therapy, medical treatment, 12-step programs, or any other professional recovery service. Instead, it serves as an additional tool and supportive community to complement the sober journey by providing an encouraging space to connect with other sober individuals and experience joy through movement together. It is meant to be used alongside, never in place of, formal treatment and support programs.

The Recovery Barre Community Agreements are read at the beginning of every meeting to help create a safe environment for all participants. These agreements are designed to foster respect, compassion, and connection among our community while protecting the integrity of The Recovery Barre format. They serve as shared values and general guidelines that, by participating in the Recovery Barre, you agree to uphold.

The barre portion of class blends low-impact Pilates, yoga, strength training, and a touch of ballet-inspired movement. You don’t need to know what barre is or have any prior experience to participate. All instructors are certified by The Recovery Barre accredited training, in which they learn to lead beginner-friendly, barreless classes that offer options for all levels, use encouraging and body-neutral language, and support participants whether it’s their first class or their hundredth. At the heart of The Recovery Barre is the belief that joyful movement and connection can powerfully support the sober journey. Whether you're brand new to exercise or not, you belong here.

The Recovery Barre is intentionally designed to be taught without a barre, making it accessible in a wide variety of spaces. While some studio-based locations may use a barre or light equipment, most classes, especially those held outside traditional studios, require only a yoga mat. Many host sites will provide you with a yoga mat, but if you have access to your own and prefer to use it, you are welcome to bring it. Your meeting directory will provide you with more location-specific details about mats. The Recovery Barre donates mats to partner locations in financial need to help ensure all participants feel supported. Please bring water and wear clothing you feel comfortable moving in.

Absolutely! Anyone who has a desire to explore sobriety, or is simply curious about living a sober lifestyle for any reason, is welcome at The Recovery Barre. You don’t need to know what route you choose in order to show up, but we do ask that all participants attend sober to support the safety and well-being of themselves and others. By listening to others share their experiences, you may naturally begin to find your own path. You might relate to their stories, or you might not. Either way, you are welcome here and your presence matters.

The length of The Recovery Barre meetings may vary by location, but most last around 1.5 hours. Typically, half the time is dedicated to community sharing, and the other half to movement. Meetings and classes will naturally vary slightly by location and instructor. (ex. If a meeting is being held at a barre studio, they may choose to incorporate the use of props; additionally, some meetings may have a women’s only focus). Meeting duration and other important details will be listed on our meeting directory page.
